Sunday 9 September 2012

Well, here’s my 2nd attempt to get this written.

We woke up at a very luxurious 8:00 this morning, got coffee from the complimentary breakfast and ate some granola and soy milk we had brought with us.

When we left the Microtel Inn our mileage was 2319 in Chatham, Kent, Ontario. We drove across the road to the gas station.  Gas is 127.3 per litre and to fill our tank was $70.37 canadian.

We drove down the road a couple blocks and stopped at Sarah’s Farm Market.  We bought some plums from Italy, some local tomatoes and local mushrooms.  It was either buy big plums from the US or tiny plums from Italy as plums are not ready yet in Ontario. We met another shopper there who asked us where we were from, told her Vt and she smiled at us and said she liked Americans and that we were a long way from home.

We continued down the road and found the Maple Leaf Cemetery.  It is a HUGE cemetery but luckily K had done her homework and found the Mercer family plot was in Ward A.  We drove around a bit until we found the family plot of John Mercer the Sheriff of Kent and family.  This is K’s 3 greats uncle.

While K took pictures and wrote up the family stones, I meandered around the wrought iron fence and took some photos of other people that I will upload and add to the Find A Grave website.

We had a train go by, initially as just an engine, then it would crash into other cars and drag them back and forth and crashed into even more cars until it picked up the two we had seen when we first found the Mercer plot (down by the rail road tracks) and trundled off with about 10 or 12 cars attached to it.  I took a picture of Lucy and the train with a few Mercer stones within their fence.

We also saw lots of black squirrels in the cemetery.  Very skittish, but very pretty.

Found some McCrea stones that I stopped and took photos of.  Don’t know yet if they are distantly related or not, but because Heltchey Wyatt married Hiram McCrea I figured I’d add them to Find A grave and check out family connections later.

We left the cemetery and headed down The 401 towards Windsor, Ontario.  We are on the truck route - check out the tires on this truck, I wonder what he is carrying.

Saw lots of windmills along the way, we saw them some yesterday as we got closer to Chatham as well.

Finally, we are in Windsor and on the road that is the truck route to the bridge to the USA.  We won’t be taking that bridge, but we might get down close enough in the next couple days to maybe get a picture.

We’re in the motel and hanging out while I write this blog a 2nd time and K is watching the Packers and the 49‘ers play football.

  1. Second try? Did wi-fi fail you the first time? When you talk about approaching Windsor, I remember seeing yellow air over Detroit, like a highlighter in the sky. Is the pollution still as bad as that? I hope they've cleaned it up by now.

  2. I was going to try to upload the video I took of Kirsten making up a story, but some how I locked everything up. So had to do a re-write and add the photos again.

It seems very clear, maybe the hundreds of windmills we saw on the way here on both sides of the road pushed the bad air away.

We are are close to Sandwich which is where Kirsten's family was and are planted... so's to speak.

Just did a search for groceries and found some interesting asian ones we might try for veggies, pesto and hummus. Been making some lovely veggie wraps and sandwiches for supper last two nights.

  3. Good work on the veggie wraps. I'm a little nervous about the matter of food on my trip to England. Last year, I managed not to eat meat, but I nearly expired of dairy overdose. I'll be fine on the boat -- I can shop at the markets and make my own meals -- but staying in a hotel is going to be a challenge.

  4. We are staying in motels, can you get to stores to buy fresh fruit and veggies? Hummus and/or pesto makes a good spread on sandwiches or wraps. We learned to ask for a fridge. They brought one up to our room just as we got settled in.
Do they have refrigerators in motels in England?

If not, then shop for supper each night unless R is wanting to go out to eat or something. It's easier to do the vegan thing in your motel room.
